Just saw Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center.
“The world saw devil that day, two men saw something else” from the line in the trailer, I guess everybody can tell what "else" they can see and what kind of movie it will be. After seeing that, no surprise.
Oliver stone shot the movie based on the true story of John McLoughlin and William J. Jimeno, two PAPDs (Port Authority Police of NYC) who trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center while they were on the mission of evacuating people on September 11th ,2001.
Just like what
Xiao said, it’s “very Hollywoodized”. Some critics say Oliver Stone lost his style (should I use this word?), but I think most of us could understand that even It’s been almost five years, but this issue is still way too sensitive to be put any conspiracy theory in. We all know that, besides two officers, there are more could be dug out in a movie named WTC, but it’s just not the time yet. Even the director is Oliver Stone.
So there’s only one right way to shoot it: the way that can show people courage, hope and love when bring them back to the one of the darkest day in the history of this nation. And OS follow the track carefully perfectly, no more no less. Well, maybe a little bit too “煽情”(which word should I use here?) near the end. But it also brought up a question: without any deep digging, what makes it different from other Hollywood disaster movies?
All the actors and actress did a good job. But since the roles in the movie don’t provide enough challenges, so they may not be nominated in the end of the year as I though before. Maybe Jay Hernandez (Willy) has some chances. Even with the absence of conspiracy and controversy, it’s still a director’s movie. This perfectly Hollywoodized movie could be the favorite for those members of the Academy who voted for TITANIC and Gladiator, but it won’t get any chance last year.
The former marine is the most impressive and symbolic character in the “WTC”. Standing on the top of the Ground Zero, he represents the indefectible spirit of the nation. “… We won’t give you up, we are Marines, you are our mission”. This role makes the movie a great commercial for the Marines recruitment.
Same as “united 93” did several month ago, “WTC” will donate 10 percent of its opening week box office incomes to the families of 9/11 victims. I heard many sobbing in the dark so I believe it will be in good shape on the box office. Overall it’s a nice movie.
But if we want see some great 9/11 movie, we have to wait.
For a very long time.
(I would appreciate if anyone can help me correct my English, one meal/mistake. Teach me, masters!)
